QUERCUS The Oaks,
mostly large growing, deciduous trees though there are some evergreen
types. Most soils are suitable, though American oaks prefer an acid
soil.

Q. castaenifolia ‘Greenspire’ Sharply toothed, dark green, leaves, deciduous. Height a broadly, columnar tree of compact habit, about 10 metres. Spread 2 to 3 metres.

Q. cerris Insignificant flowers followed by acorns on mature trees. Slightly rough lobed, mid green leaves, deciduous. Height  a vigorous hardy, large, tree 8 to 12 metres, eventually more. Spread 5 to 7 metres. Excellent for chalky soils
Q. coccinea Insignificant flowers. Glossy, deeply lobed, dark green leaves, often turning a glowing scarlet in the autumn, deciduous. Height Fast growing and narrow when young broadens with age, 8 to 10 metres. Spread 4 to 6 metres. Best autumn colour in acid soils and in full sun.
Q. coccinea ‘Splendens’ Deeply lobed, dark green leaves.  Selected for its scarlet autumn colour.  Fast growing and narrow when young, broadens with age. Height  8 to 10 metres. Spread 4 to 6 metres. Best autumn colour in acid soils and in full sun.

Q. frainetto Insignificant flowers followed by acorns on mature trees. Long deeply lobed, mid-green leaves, deciduous. Height a fast growing tree 8 to 10 metres. Spread 6 to 8 metres. Excellent for chalky soils.

Q. x hispanica ‘William Lucombe’ (Was Q. x hisp. `Leucombeana’) Long, lobed, mid-green leaves, semi-evergreen.  Height a medium to large tree, 8 to 10 metres. Spread 5 to 6 metres.

Q. ilex Yellow catkins in June are followed by small acorns. Glossy, dark green, leathery leaves, paler below, evergreen. Height 5 to 8 metres, ultimately more. Spread 4 to 6 metres.

Q. palustris Deeply lobed, glossy green leaves usually autumn scarlet in autumn, deciduous. Height a large, dense headed, tree with slender branches drooping at the tips, 8 to 10 metres often more. Spread 5 to 6 metres.

Q. petraea Acorns follow insignificant flowers on mature trees. Long stalked, lobed, mid-green, leaves, deciduous. Height  a large tree of rounded habit 10 metres plus. Spread 5 to 7 metres.

Q. robur Insignificant flowers followed by acorns on mature trees. Lobed mid-green leaves, deciduous. Height a large slow growing tree with a broad, round, head, 10 metres. Spread 8 to 10 m.
Q. robur f. fastigiata Lobed mid green leaves and acorns.  Slow growing, large columnar tree 8 to 10 metres. Spread of 2 to 4 metres.
Q. rubra Large, mid-green, lobed leaves, autumn colour varies from dull crimson to deep red-brown, occasionally ruby-red or yellow and brown, deciduous. Height a fast growing, large tree 10 metres plus. Spread 7 to 8 metres.
Q. suber We have been supplied with acorns by the Cork Industry Federation and hope to have some young trees available by the autumn.  Quercus suber  is an evergreen tree that is unlikely to produce thick cork or acorns in the UK.
