ARBUTUS – evergreen shrubs for moist, best grown on well drained acid soils. Will tolerate some lime. Sheltered site as can be damaged by cold winter weather. E  

Arbutus x andrachnoides  Clusters of small white flowers appear from September to November and are followed by small strawberry-like, orange-red. fruits. Dark glossy green leaves, evergreen on peeling branches. Height a large shrub to small tree, 3 metres. Spread 2 to 3 metres. The most lime tolerant variety.
Arbutus unedo AGM   Urn-shaped, white, flowers appear from October to December and are followed by strawberry-like fruits. Glossy dark green leaves, evergreen. Height a large shrub to small tree, 5 to 7 metres. Spread 3 to 4 metres, sheltered site as may be damaged in hard weather.
