MALUS The ornamental Crab Apples. Deciduous flowering trees often having interesting fruits which may, in some cases, be used to make Crab Apple jelly.

Malus GeorgeousM. x atrosanguinea 'Gorgeous'
Malus bhutanicaM. bhutanica (Was known as toringoides) Creamy white, slightly fragrant, flowers in May. Pear shaped fruits, red or yellow. Mid green leaves attractive autumn tints, deciduous.  Height 3 to 4 metres.  Spread 3 to 4 metres.
M. ‘Butterball’

M. coronaria ‘Charlottae’ Large, semi-double, shell pink, violet, scented flowers in late May and early June. Large, oval toothed, leaves turning red in autumn.  Height 5 to 8metres. Spread 5 to 8 metres.

M. ‘Directeur Moerland ’

Malus EveresteM. ‘Evereste’ AGM Red buds opening white in April and May, orange to orange yellow fruits.  Dark green lobed leaves, deciduous.  Height: 5 to 8 metres.  Conical shaped tree. Spread: 3 to 6 metres.

Malus floribundaM. floribunda AGM Crimson buds open to white or pale blush flowers in early April followed by tiny red and yellow fruits. Small green leaves, deciduous. Height a small tree or large shrub, about 5 metres. Spread 5 to 6.5 metres.

M. 'Golden Gem'

M. hupehensis AGM Soft pink buds open to, fragrant, white flowers in May and June, followed by small deep red fruits in late Summer and Autumn. Small dark green leaves, deciduous. Height a small tree to about 5 metres. Spread 3 to 4 metres.

Malus John DownieM. ‘John Downie’ AGM White flowers in April and May followed by large, conical orange and red fruits, edible. Oval green leaves, deciduous. Height upright when young wider when older, 6 to 8 metres. Spread 4 to 5 metres.

Malus x moerlandsii LisetM. x moerlandsii ‘Liset’ Deep crimson buds open to rose-red flowers in April and are followed by glossy red fruits. Young leaves purplish turning dark green , deciduous. height dense rounded habit to about 5 metres. Spread 3 to 4 metres.

Malus x moelandsii ProfusionM. x moerlandsii ‘Profusion’ Deep crimson buds open to rose-red flowers in April and May followed by glossy red fruits. Dark green leaves, purplish when young, deciduous. Height a dense rounded tree to about 5 metres. Spread 3 to 4 metres.

M.'Pink Glow’

M. x robusta ‘Red Sentinel’ AGM Single white, flowers in mid-May followed by bright scarlet, long lasting fruits. Oval green leaves, deciduous. Height 3 to 5 metres. Spread 3 to 4 metres, often weighed down by the weight of fruit.

Malus robusta Red SiberianM. x robusta ‘Red Siberian’ Pink buds open to white, pink backed flowers, (can occasionally be plain white) in April and May followed by cherry red fruits. Mid green leaves, deciduous.  Height 3 to 5 metres. Spread 3 to 4 metres. Prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade.

Malus RoyaltyM. ‘Royalty’ Large purplish-crimson flowers in May followed by small, dark red, fruits. Dark purple leaves turn red in autumn, deciduous. Height a small tree of upright growth, 3 to 5 metres. Spread 3 to 4 metres.

Malus x schiedeckeri Red JadeM. x schiedeckeri ‘Red Jade’ White, single flowers flushed pale pink April and May followed by small red fruits. Oval, bright green leaves, deciduous. Height a weeping tree, about 4 metres. Spread 5 to 6 metres.
Malus SnowcloudM. ‘Snowcloud’ Pale pink buds opening to white semi-double to double flowers in May.  A few yellow fruits follow.  Mid green leaves deciduous. Height 3 to 5 metres. Spread 3 to 4 metres.

M. toringoides  Now known as Malus bhutanica

M. tschonoskii AGM Large, single, white, tinged pink flowers in May. Often followed by dull red fruits. Mid green leaves, felt like beneath. Good red and yellow autumn colour, deciduous. Height an erect, pyramidal shaped tree to about 10 metres. Spread about 3 metres.

Malus x zumi Golden HornetM. x zumi ‘Golden Hornet’ AGM Open cup-shaped white flowers in April and May followed by a profusion of yellow crab apples. Green leaves, deciduous. Height a small tree 6 to 8 metres. Spread about 4 to 6 metres.
