CASTANEA Often thought of as a British native, these trees are suitable for Well-drained soils in full sun. Moderately tolerate of lime soils but do not like shallow chalk soils.

C. sativa AGM Erect, pale green, catkins in July followed, especially after hot summers, by edible nuts in a spiny casing. Oblong, glossy, toothed, dark green leaves turn yellow in autumn, deciduous. Height a large tree over 15 metres. Spread 8 to 10 metres.
