BETULA Fast growing trees usually with attractive bark. Most are suited to dry acid soils in sun or part shade but will often tolerate quite wet sites.

B.  albosinensis 'Sable'
B. albosinensis var. septentrionalis AGM Oval to lance shaped, mid-green leaves, deciduous. Orange to orange-brown bark peeling to reveal pinkish-grey. Height a medium sized tree, 6 to 7 metres. Spread 3 metres.
B. ermanii ‘Grayswood Hill’ AGM Deciduous, open-branched, elegant tree that has peeling, pinkish-white bark becoming white with age. Oval, glossy, green leaves, deciduous. Height 6 to 8 metres. Spread 3 to 4 metres.
B. nigra (Wakehurst Form) Catkins in spring. Diamond shaped soft green leaves, deciduous. Pinkish young bark, peeling brown with age. Height a fast growing tree to 10 metres. Spread 3 to 5 metres. Thrives in sun or part shade in moist soils.

B. papyrifera Catkins in spring. Slender pointed mid green leaves, yellow in the autumn, deciduous. White bark on older trees. Height a large tree 6 to 10 metres. Spread 3 to 5 metres. Useful for thin sandy soils.

B. pendula AGM Catkins in spring. Diamond shaped mid green leaves, yellow autumn colour, deciduous. Silvery bark marked with black. Height 7 to 10 metres, lax habit. Spread 3 to 5 metres.
B. pendula ‘Fastigiata’ Catkins in spring. Diamond shaped mid green leaves, yellow autumn colour, deciduous. Silvery bark marked with black. Height slender upright growth to about 8 metres. Spread about 1 metre.
B. pendula 'Golden Beauty'
B. pendula ‘Laciniata’ (Was known as B.p. ‘Dalecarlica’) Deeply cut, mid-green, leaves on graceful drooping branches, deciduous, some yellow autumn colour. Whitish bark on mature trees. Height 7 to 10 metres. Spread 3 to 5 metres.
B. pendula ‘Purpurea’ Catkins in spring. Diamond shaped, purple, leaves, striking in the spring, deciduous. Height 7 to 10 metres, lax habit. Spread 3 to 5 metres. most soils.
Betula pendula TristisB. pendula ‘Tristis’ AGM Insignificant catkins. Mid green leaves, on graceful drooping branches, turn yellow in the autumn, deciduous. Height a symmetrical tree with pendulous branches to about 8 metres. Spread 3 to 5 metres.
Betula pendula YoungiiB. pendula ‘Youngii’ Diamond shaped, mid-green, leaves, deciduous. Older  trees have white bark marked with black. Height a dome shaped tree with arching branches, 3 to 4 metres. Spread 3 to 5 m.
Betula utilis v. jacquemontiiB. utilis var. jacquemontii Beautiful tree with white bark. Oval serrated, mid-green leaves turn clear yellow in autumn, deciduous. Height about 10 metres. Spread 5 metres.

B. utilis var.jacquemontii  ‘Grayswood Ghost’ AGM Beautiful tree with pure white, peeling bark, bark. Oval serrated, mid-green leaves turn clear yellow in autumn, deciduous.

B. utilis var. jacquemontii  ‘Jermyns’ AGMCreamy white, peeling, bark, orange coloured branches. Oval serrated, mid-green leaves turn clear yellow in autumn, deciduous. Height about 10. Spread 5 m.
B. utilis var. jacquemontii ‘Silver Shadow’ AGM Gleaming white trunk. Large, oval, serrated, mid-green leaves turn clear yellow in autumn, deciduous. Height about 10 metres. Spread 5 metres.
