BerberisEvergreen and deciduous, shrubs most having spiny stems and leaves. Will grow in full sun or partial shade in well drained, moist soil.

B. aggregata  Pale yellow flowers in April and May followed by masses of red berries in the autumn.  Small grey green leaves, good autumn tints, deciduous. Height a dense shrub to 1.5 metres.  Spread about 1 metre. D
B. buxifolia ‘Pygmea’ (Was Berberis buxifolia `Nana') A few yellow flowers in March and April. Dark green leaves, greyish below, evergreen. Height a dwarf shrub to about 45cm. Spread 45cm. E

B. candidula   Bright yellow flowers in May and June, oval, purple berries in the autumn. Leaves are narrowly oblong, glossy, dark green, white beneath, evergreen. Height and spread a dwarf shrub to about 0.6 metres. E

B. x carminea ‘Pirate King’ Small, yellow, flowers in April and May followed by large, translucent, orange-red berries. Mid-green leaves, deciduous. Height upright growing, 1 to 1.2 metres. Spread 1 to 1.2 metres. D
Berberis darwiniiB. darwinii AGM  Dense clusters of orange-yellow flowers in May are followed by plum coloured fruits.  Three pointed dark green leaves, evergreen. Height and Spread 1.5 to 2 metres. E
B. dictophylla AGM    Pale yellow  flowers in May are followed by red berries covered with a white bloom. Young stems covered with a white bloom, grey-green leaves, white below, deciduous. Height arching growth to about 2 metres. Spread  1.5 to 2 metres. D
B. x hybridogagnepainii 'Chenaultii'
B. x interposita ‘Wallich’s Purple’ Yellow flowers in April and May. Dark green leaves, purplish young growth, the leaves also have a purplish sheen in winter, evergreen. Height an arching shrub 1.2 to 2 metres. Spread 1.2 to 1.8 metres. E

B. julianae AGM    Dense clusters of slightly scented, yellow, flowers in May are followed by blue-black fruits. Coppery, spiny edged, young leaves turn glossy, dark green, evergreen. Height a dense shrub up to 3 metres. Spread about 2.5 metres. E

B. linearifolia ‘Orange King’   Bears large rich orange flowers in April and May. Glossy dark green leaves, spiny at the tip, evergreen. Height slow growing, erect shrub to 2 to 3 metres.  Spread 1 to 1.2 metres. E
B. x lologensis ‘Apricot Queen’ AGM   Large rich apricot-yellow flowers in April and May. Glossy dark green leaves, some spiny others not, evergreen. Height slow growing, erect shrub about 2 metres.  Spread 1 to 1.2 metres. E
B. x media ‘Red Jewel’ AGM   Small yellow flowers in May. Broad, metallic purple, spiny, leaves, deciduous. Height and Spread about 1 metre. D

Berberis ottawensis SuperbaB. x ottawensis f.purpurea ‘Superba’ AGM   Yellow flowers in April and May then red berries. Large, matt purple leaves, deciduous. Height about 1.5 to 3 metres. Spread 1.5 to 2.5 metres. D

B. ‘Red Tears’  Pale yellow flowers in April and May followed by drooping clusters of waxy, red, berries. Large, green, leaves turn red in the autumn, deciduous. Height 1 to 2 metres.  Spread 1 to 1.5 metres. D

B. x stenophylla AGM  Masses of golden-yellow flowers in April and May followed by small, blue-black berries. Small, narrow, dark green, young shoots purplish, evergreen. Height 2 to 3 metres.  Spread 3 to 4 metres.  E

B. x stenophylla  ‘Claret Cascade’  Rich orange flowers flushed scarlet, April and May, followed by small, blue-black berries. Small, narrow, dark green, young shoots purplish, evergreen. Height up to 2 metres. Spread about 2.5 metres. E

B. x stenophylla  'Corallina'

Berberis stenophylla IrwiniiB. x stenophylla  ‘Irwinii’  Deep yellow flowers in April and May. Small narrow, dark green, leaves, evergreen. Height a small arching shrub up to 1 metre. Spread about 1 metre. E

B. temolaica AGM   Pale yellow flowers in April and May are followed by egg-shaped, red, berries covered with a white bloom.  Young shoots and leaves greyish turning darker with age. Height about 3 metres. Spread 1.5 to 2.5 metres. D

B. thunbergii AGM   Pale yellow flowers in April followed by bright red berries. Green leaves turn red in the autumn, deciduous. Height 1.2 to 2 metres. Spread 1.2 to 1.5 metres. D

Berberis thunbergii atropurpureaB. thunbergii f.atropurpurea  Pale yellow flowers in April followed by plum coloured berries. Rich, reddish-purple foliage turns bright red in autumn, deciduous. Height 1.5 to 1.8 metres. Spread 1.2 to 1.5 metres. D

Height and Spread a dwarf shrub to about 0.3 metres rounder and neater in habit than 'Atropuropurea Nana'. D

B. thunbergii f.atropurpurea ‘Dart's Red Lady’  Yellow flowers in May. Large almost purple black shiny leaves turning red in the autumn, deciduous. Height and Spread about 1 metre. D

Berberis thunbergii Golden RingB. thunbergii f.atropurpurea ‘Golden Ring’ AGM Purple leaves with a fine yellow line around the edge, scarlet to red in the autumn, deciduous. Height about 1 to 1.5 metres. Spread 0.5 to 1 metre. D

Berberis thunbergii HarlequinB. thunbergii f.atropurpurea ‘Harlequin’ Yellow flowers in May. Beautiful purplish pink leaves heavily mottled with pink, deciduous. Height and Spread about 1 metre. D

Berberis thunbergii Helmond PillaB. thunbergii f.atropurpurea ‘Helmond Pillar’ Small yellow flowers in April and May followed by blood red berries. Rich purple leaves scarlet tinted in autumn, deciduous. Height Very upright growing,  0.9 to 1 metre. Spread 0.3 to 0.45 metres.  D

B. wilsoniae  Yellow flowers in April and May followed by masses of coral berries in the autumn. Small sea green leaves, good autumn tints, deciduous. Height a dense shrub to 1.5 metres.  Spread about 1.5 metres. D
